Now I'm sitting in a quiet room at a very good hotel. It is a peaceful little place hidden among the trees. It's just past noon, late July, and I'm listening to some life-or-death crying a few feet away.
There's a small fly which is making the last effort of its short life in a fruitless trying to fly through the glass of the window. The beating wings tell the moving story of the fly's plan: Try harder and harder. But it's not working.
The effort offers no hope for the fly. In fact, the hard work is part of the failure. It is impossible for the fly to try hard enough to succeed in breaking through the glass. But this little fly has bet its life on reaching its goal through this effort. It will die there on the window.
Across the room, ten steps away, the door is open. It takes only ten seconds for the fly to reach the outside world and be free. It would be so easy if the fly tried to move to that direction.
Why doesn't the fly try a different way? How did it get to the idea of keeping this way?
There is no doubt that it is important for the fly to keep trying hard. But this idea will kill the fly, too. Trying harder isn't necessarily the way of getting more. It may not give any real hope for getting what you want. Sometimes, in fact, it's a big part of the problem.
If you only try harder, you may kill your chances for success. You need to find a smarter way of trying harder, that is, trying harder by trying smarter.
